CEO Of KATH Seeks BoG Support To Address Equipment Deficit

Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, the Ceo of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has appealed to the Bank of Ghana for financial support to help retool the hospital, citing critical equipment shortages affecting healthcare delivery. The appeal was made during a meeting with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and his management team at the central bank’s headquarters in Accra. The engagement is part of ongoing efforts by Dr. Baidoo to secure both state and corporate assistance to tackle infrastructure and equipment deficits at the facility.
KATH serves as a major referral centre for 12 out of Ghana’s 16 regions and plays a vital role in the country’s healthcare system. However, despite its strategic importance and skilled medical workforce, the hospital is grappling with outdated and non-functional medical equipment. Currently, most of the critical equipment such as C.T. scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Oxygen Plants and Central Sterilisation equipment at the hospital are either down or working at fault,” Dr. Baidoo told the BoG management. Vital equipment like a Catheterisation Laboratory (CATHLAB) and Mammogram are not even available at all.
He noted that limited state resources meant government alone could not meet the hospital’s urgent needs, hence the call for support from corporate institutions like the central bank. It would not be out of place if corporate entities like the BoG assisted with funding to procure such vital life-saving equipment to enable the hospital provide the best of specialist services to the public, he said.
In response, Dr. Asiama acknowledged the hospital’s importance in Ghana’s healthcare delivery and assured the team that the central bank would carefully consider the request. Health facilities like KATH which are providing critical services to the public deserve to be supported, and the appeal made by its CEO will be seriously considered, he said. The management of the bank will study the list of the critically needed equipment submitted and take a firm decision as soon as possible.
