Excavators Seized In Joint Anti-Galamsey Operation In Jimira Forest Reserve

A joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and Forestry Commission has led to the seizure of three excavators during a crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Jimira Forest Reserve. A police statement dated August 2 indicated that the operation was triggered after Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, acted on a Facebook post by Joy FM journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, which reported that illegal miners had invaded the protected forest.

In response, the Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce, led by DSP Karim Mahama and ASP Alhaji Bawah Abdul Jalil, was swiftly deployed to verify the claims and enforce the law. Upon arrival, the team learned that the Forestry Commission, working with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, had already moved in and seized one excavator after the miners fled the area. The task force continued into the forest for further investigations.

Inside the reserve, two SHANTUI excavators were found abandoned and immobile due to mechanical issues. Signs of recent mining confirmed the area had been actively used. On the way to the site, the team encountered another SHANTUI excavator left in the middle of the road, blocking access. The machine was cleared and transported to the Manso Adubia Police Station, where it has been impounded pending further investigation.

The Special Anti-Galamsey team continues to monitor the situation, reinforcing the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining activities and preserving the country’s forest reserves,” the police assured in the statement.
