Teshie Homowo Suspended Following Deadly Clashes

2025 Teshie Homowo Festival have been suspended following deadly clashes earlier this week that resulted in three deaths and several injuries. The Accra High Court, Criminal Division, issued the injunction on Friday, August 29, 2025, after the Ghana Police Service filed an ex parte application supported by an affidavit from PW L/Cpl. Sandra Mintah. The court ruling allows only traditional rites to continue, halting all outdoor and public activities linked to the festival.
The violence broke out on Tuesday, August 26, during the customary sprinkling of Kpokpoi, a ritual marking the Homowo Festival. According to police, the clashes involved rival youth groups from the Lenshie and Gbugblah clans. Tensions quickly escalated, leaving many in the community shaken. ASP Benjamin Baafi, who presented the application in court, said the move was necessary to avoid further unrest and maintain public order.
“Given the tragic outcome earlier this week, the court’s decision is aimed at protecting lives and ensuring peace in the community,” he noted. Festival events originally planned for Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31, are now officially called off. Residents are urged to observe only the traditional aspects of the celebration indoors or in private settings. For many in Teshie, the suspension is a painful but necessary step. Locals say the Homowo Festival is not only a cultural cornerstone but also a time for community bonding.
