Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has honoured the entire Super Falcons squad with a prestigious national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of their triumphant win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco. The conferment ceremony took place during a grand reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where each of the 24 team members also received a $100,000 cash prize and a brand-new three-bedroom apartment. This celebration came just two days after the Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final match, securing Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

The victory was a poignant moment for Nigerian football, showcasing the team’s resilience, skill, and determination under pressure. President Tinubu, speaking at the event, praised the players for their unity and inspirational commitment that brought joy to millions of Nigerians nationwide. The awarding of national honors and substantial rewards reflects a continuity in President Tinubu’s efforts to motivate and recognize Nigeria’s sports heroes. Earlier, the Super Eagles were similarly celebrated and rewarded following their commendable runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Such gestures are seen as part of broader initiatives to support and elevate Nigerian football on the continental stage. Guided by head coach Justin Madugu, the Super Falcons’ journey to WAFCON 2024 glory was marked by overcoming significant hurdles. After progressing through the group stage, the team eliminated tough opponents Zambia and South Africa and then faced Morocco in a highly anticipated final. Their win was not just a sporting triumph but also an emotional redemption following their semi-final loss to the same Moroccan side in 2022.
