The Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly says it is committed to supporting farmers in the district to fully participate in the government’s Feed Ghana programme. To this end, the Assembly is working closely with the Department of Agriculture to register farmers into cooperatives to make it easier for them to take full advantage of the programme. The District Chief Executive (DCE), Madam Mary Haruna, made this known during the Assembly’s first ordinary meeting of the second session at Nadowli.

She updated the House on key sectors, including agriculture, security, education, health, and Internally Generated Funds (IGF). Throwing more light on the Feed Ghana programme, Madam Haruna said the initiative is designed with sustainability at its core and tailored to meet the unique needs of every farmer in the country. She noted that when farmers are grouped into cooperatives, access to inputs, technical assistance, and market linkages becomes much easier.

On education, the DCE said the sector remains one of the key priorities of the District. Despite limited resources, she said a significant portion of the Assembly’s budgetary allocation goes into improving education, stressing that it is the foundation for sustainable development and the empowerment of future generations.

Madam Haruna, however, expressed concern over the persistent underperformance of students at the basic level. She revealed that the district’s BECE pass rate dropped from 19.9% in 2023 to 14% in 2024, describing the situation as alarming and requiring immediate collective action. She charged the District Education Directorate to identify the causes of the decline and develop actionable strategies to reverse the trend.

On healthcare, the DCE said several interventions are underway to strengthen service delivery and provide a conducive working environment for health professionals. She cited the ongoing construction of a doctor’s bungalow and a kitchen facility under DACF-RFG and SOCO as examples. “We believe these projects will serve as great motivation for our health workers to continue delivering their best services to our communities, she added.

On Internally Generated Funds, the DCE said the Assembly has mobilised GH₵310,783.84 out of a target of GH₵452,622.25, representing 68% of the target. She, however, noted that some area councils continue to face challenges in revenue mobilisation. To address these issues, the Secretariat is developing strategies, including the recruitment of secretaries, treasurers, and commission collectors, to enhance the performance of sub-structures.

Madam Haruna added that the government of John Dramani Mahama has renewed the hope of Ghanaians, including residents of the Nadowli-Kaleo District. She cited flagship programmes such as the 24-Hour Economy, Feed Ghana, No Fee Stress, and an enhanced Common Fund for infrastructure projects as designed to improve the quality of life, create jobs, and accelerate development.

The DCE concluded that the district will strategically position itself to take full advantage of these programmes and will engage farmers, traders, artisans, and the private sector to harness opportunities under the Feed Ghana initiative, aimed at boosting food security and creating sustainable livelihoods.
