Ablekuma North Rerun: Police Officer Interdicted For Assaulting Journalist Faces Criminal Charges

The Accra Regional Police Command says it has launched investigations into the series of violent incidents that marred the parliamentary re-run election in Ablekuma North, Accra, on Friday, July 11. In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the police confirmed that they are reviewing multiple videos capturing assaults and disturbances at various polling stations. The Command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations, the statement noted.

According to the police, vital leads have been gathered, and arrests are expected soon. Victims involved in the reported assaults have been issued Police Medical Report Forms to support their medical needs and facilitate further inquiry. One of the major incidents under scrutiny involves a police officer seen in a video assaulting a journalist at the polling station. The officer, who has since been interdicted, is now facing criminal charges for assault.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to holding accountable anyone found culpable of violence, intimidation, or electoral misconduct. “We encourage the public to cooperate with the Police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” the statement added. The Ablekuma North re-run was ordered after the initial parliamentary election results were annulled over procedural irregularities.

Friday’s poll was meant to restore confidence in the electoral process but was instead disrupted by pockets of violence and allegations of police brutality.
