Some members of the European Parliament (EMPS) are urging the European Commission to open discussions with the governments of Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana to also discuss ways to also increase cocoa prices in the two countries. The MEPs in a letter called on the Commission to enter into negotiations with Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire
following a proposal by the two largest cocoa producing countries to establish an Economic Pact for sustainable cocoa production to address the entire value chain of the commodity. They also want an Economic Pact that addresses key sustainability barrier, a living income for farmers would be a key enabler in support of reaching
the objectives of the upcoming EU legislation on deforestation-free products and corporate sustainability due diligence. The undesigned MPs argue that eradicating child labour and deforestation require integrated efforts across policy sectors.
