Failure Of OSP To Charge Frimpong-Boateng Leading To Speculations - Pianim
Renowned Ghanaian economist Kwame Pianim says the failure of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to charge former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng after his arrest is creating room for speculations regarding what he might have done wrong.
The renowned heart surgeon was put under investigation following an invitation given to him by the OSP weeks ago. He was invited on corruption and corruption-related activities, particularly his report on the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM). He was also arrested on May 16, 2023, for alleged involvement in the missing of some 500 excavators and the participation of Symphony Limited, the company owned by his son, in illegal mining.
He was immediately granted bail of GH¢2 million. According to Prof. Frimpong -Boateng, he has not been charged by the Office of the Special Prosecutor. Reacting to this new development, Mr Kwame Pianim, in an interview said, If Prof Frimpong-Boateng is in any way connected to galamsey or promotes galamsey or stops it from being eradicated, I will be the first person to take him to the police.
What I am saying is that in the investigation, people are deemed innocent until proven guilty, and somebody of his stature anywhere in the world would have been given self-recognition. I don’t know the information that the Special Prosecutor has that he might run away outside the country, and because of that, he needs to be prevented. He could have taken his passport.
We should know the charges. Are we made to infer that he is part of a criminal gang that is promoting galamsey, or is he related to defamation or the leaking of the report that he made to the president at the request of the president? he questioned.
