Ghana Water Losing 73 million Gallons Daily In Accra - MD

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company is losing approximately 73 million gallons of treated water every day in the Greater Accra Region alone. Speaking in an interview on August 6, Mr. Mutawakilu said the region produces around 140 million gallons daily, but only 67 million gallons can be accounted for meaning nearly 52% of the water supply goes unaccounted for due to factors such as theft, illegal connections, and dilapidated infrastructure.
Out of the 140 million gallons we produce daily in Greater Accra, we can only trace 67 million. That means 73 million gallons are lost every single day, he stated. And even with the 67 million gallons we track, we’re still unable to collect full revenue.
Nationwide, the situation is just as alarming. Mr. Mutawakilu noted that only 48% of treated water is properly accounted for across the country, leaving more than half either lost or unbilled. He described the situation as unsustainable, warning that persistent losses on this scale are severely impacting the company’s ability to fund operations and maintain reliable water service delivery.
