Ghanaian-American faces 30 years in prison for romance fraud

A Ghanaian-American, Henry N. Asomani faces 30 years in prison for his role in a $3 million romance scam. Mr Asomani is accused of ripping off people looking for love online.

A jury convicted Asomani of six counts related to his role in wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracies, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri.

The two-year scheme involved 13 victims.
Mr Asomani and his accomplices persuaded users of social media and dating sites to provide money for gold mines, school and travel.

Mr Asomani served as the middleman and received proceeds of the fraud from unknown co-conspirators. He kept part of the money to himself and sent the rest to Ghana.
