Government Signs Agreement With AirtelTigo For Transfer Of Ownership
The government of of Ghana has signed an agreement with telecommunications company AirtelTigo for the transfer of ownership to the state. The government of Ghana and the parent companies of AirtelTigo, Bharti Airtel Ghana Holdings B.V, MIC Africa B.V signed the transfer after they concluded negotiations to transfer the shares of the company to the Ghana government.
The transfer of ownership comes after the AirtelTigo in June 2020 announced its decision to exit the Ghanaian market. This agreement transfers all customers, assets and agreed liabilities of AirtelTigo to the government of Ghana. We consider this a positive step as it adds to the growing portfolio of of digital infrastructure assets being utilized by the government, the Communication

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful signed on behalf of the government of Ghana, while Ms. Jatina Catharina Uneken van de Vreede, Mr. Martin P Frechette, Timothy Pennington, Mr Eric Nana Nipah, and also Vish Ashiagbor signed on behalf of the seller entities. B.V., MIC Africa B.V have concluded negotiations and signed an agreement to transfer the shares of the company to the Ghana Government following the announcement of the company’s departure from the Ghanaian market last year. This agreement transfers all customers, assets, and agreed liabilities of AirtelTigo to the Government of Ghana. We also consider this a
positive step as it adds to the growing portfolio of the digital infrastructure assets being also utilized by the government. The government will operate this national asset in the best interest of the nation, the company, the telecommunications industry and also ensure the protection of the interests of all employees, customers, contractors, suppliers, stakeholders and sustain the
digital transformation of Ghana. The Minister for the Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while Jatina Catharina Uneken-van de Vreede, Martin P Frechette, Timothy Pennington, Eric Nana Nipah, and Vish Ashiagbor signed on behalf of the seller entities. In the October 2020 Airtel and Millicom announced that they were exiting Ghanaian market and this agreement
also concludes the extensive negotiations between the parties to ensure a seamless transition and continued operation of AirtelTigo thereafter. Telecommunications sector is of strategic importance to government and it is critical the sector remains healthy, dynamic vibrant and most importantly, competitive.
