Kidnap of Canadians in Ghana: 3 Nigerians, Ghanaian apprehended, arraigned
In a swift move by Ghanaian Police, three Nigerians and one Ghanaian have been arrested in connection with the crime.
The suspects — Sampson Aghalor a.k.a Romeo; a 27-year-old computer engineer, Elvis Ojiyorwe; a 27-year-old businessman, Jeff Omarsa, a 28-year-old Tiler (all Nigerians) and Yusif Yakubu, a Ghanaian resident.
The men allegedly kidnapped Ms Lauren Tilley and Ms Bailey Chitty who were in Ghana for voluntary work but were residing in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
The abductors hid the Canadians in an uncompleted building at Amoam-Achiase in the Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region, report said.
The suspects had during their trial on Thursday, denied the charges. One of the suspects, Aghalor had accused the Ghana investigator in charge of the case of holding on to his money.
According to him, he has GHS890 (N58,822) with the investigator but was given only GHS250 (N16,523).Another Nigerian suspect, Ojiyorwe had a similar complaint.
Justice George Buadi insisted on hearing the accounts before proceeding with the kidnap case.
All the suspects were remanded in Ghana’s Nsawam Prison while hearing in the case was adjourned until Nov. 21. However, a new judge is expected to try the case on Nov. 21 since Justice Buadi would be retiring at the end of November.
