La General Hospital to be closed on March 1
The La General Hospital is set to be closed on March 1, 2020, to pave way for a scheduled redevelopment of the facility. The Health Ministry and the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate have however instructed the evacuation of the premises by the said date to make the process possible. Following this move, the hospital has scheduled a “gradual cessation of services and final closure” to guide activities of patrons going forward.
According to a memo from the facility’s Acting Superintendent to all staff, the O & G and Surgical Departments will, on February 18, stop booking patients for surgery, while already booked patients will be transferred to other hospitals. OPD will also stop admissions as emergency patients will be stabilised and transferred.
The memo cited also outlined that on February 24, 2020, La General Hospital will refer remaining in-patients to sister facilities, stop night duties at OPD, Surgery, Medical and Paediatrics Wards.
OPD will also be run from 8 am to 8 pm within this period while the Labour Wards will be closed. However, the O & G will continue night duty on the ward until all patients are discharged.March 1 will see the final closure of the facility for the planned redevelopment.
