National Security Destroys Fake Diapers

Authorities in Ashanti Region have intercepted and destroyed a large consignment of counterfeit baby diapers smuggled from Nigeria and falsely branded as Ghanaian products. The seizure was conducted by National Security officers at Asafo, under the Interchange in Kumasi, where the goods were being unloaded. The operation took place three weeks ago after officers trailed a truck transporting the products from Accra. Initial inspections raised suspicions, and further checks confirmed that the accompanying port duty documents had been forged.
Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, explained that a pack of diapers was purchased on-site for inspection before officers demanded documentation. We followed the truck to the Asafo Interchange, where the goods were being offloaded. Our officers first purchased a pack for inspection and later demanded documentation. Customs confirmed the documents were fake, leading to the seizure, he said. Tests conducted by the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) later confirmed that the diapers were unsafe for use. Based on FDA recommendations, the products were transferred to Zoomlion’s Medical Waste Treatment Plant and scientifically destroyed on August 20, 2025.
While some individuals have contacted the National Security office claiming ownership of the goods, none have appeared in person to assist investigations. Authorities believe the operation is led by a Nigerian smuggling ring and are now focusing efforts on arresting those responsible and identifying their local collaborators in Kumasi. National Security says it is committed to protecting public health and cracking down on counterfeit goods that pose risks to consumers.
