Parliament Rejects EC’s Proposed CI For 2024 Elections
Parliament has unanimously rejected the rejected the Electoral Commission (EC) Constitutional Instrument (CI), making the Ghana card sole registration document. The Legislative body has consequently directed Electoral Commission (EC) to present a new one with guarantor system reinstated.
In presenting the report to the committee of the whole on draft CI on behalf of Speaker, First Deputy Speaker, Osei-Owusu urged parliament to officially communicate to the EC of the house’s decision for favorable consideration before finalization and presentation of the new CI to parliament for passage into law.
The EC in the new CI has scrapped the guarantor system, limited registration to district offices and proof of nationality to only the Ghana card. The move prompted the Committee of the Whole to meet the EC and NIA officials which has resulted in the production of this report.
