President Tinubu Gifts Nigeria’s D’Tigress $100,000 And New Apartments Each For AfroBasket 2025 Victory


Nigeria’s D’Tigress have been handsomely rewarded for their historic victory at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket, receiving $100,000 and new apartments each from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Tinubu also conferred the prestigious Order of the Niger (OON) on every player, marking a high honor for their achievement. In addition, each coach was awarded $50,000 in recognition of their vital role in the team’s success.


The D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title by defeating Mali 78-64 in the final, bringing their total number of AfroBasket championships to seven. This astounding feat establishes them as the only team on the continent to have won five titles in a row. Their dominance in African women’s basketball is further underscored by an unbeaten streak of 29 consecutive wins in Africa since 2015, illustrating their sustained excellence over a decade.




President Tinubu lauded the team’s skill, resilience, and teamwork throughout the tournament, stating that their performance brought immense pride and global recognition to Nigeria. He specially praised head coach Rena Wakama for her outstanding leadership and strategic execution, crediting her as an inspiration for the team and a trailblazer as the first woman to lead D’Tigress to AfroBasket glory. The rewards include $100,000 cash prizes and new three-bedroom apartments, symbolizing the Nigerian government’s commitment to honoring their champions.


The national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) was bestowed on the players to recognize their contribution to national pride. The coaches, as critical members of the team’s success, were also generously rewarded with $50,000 each.This rewarding of D’Tigress follows a similar precedent set for Nigeria’s female football team, the Super Falcons, after their recent continental success.
