Prison Conditions In Ghana Harsh, Sometimes Life-Threatening In Aging Buildings – US Report

The U.S. Department of State’s 2021 Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices has cited Ghana for having life-threatening prison system. The latest report released on 12 April 2022 goes hard on corruption as well as the human rights violations in the West African country. In this US report, Ghana’s prisons have been

tagged as not only having harsh conditions but life-threatening ones due to overcrowding, and inadequate sanitary conditions, lack of medical care, physical abuse, and food shortages. While the prisoners had access to potable water, food was inadequate. Meals routinely lacked fruit, vegetables, or meat, forcing prisoners to rely

on charitable donations and their families to supplement their diet. Officials held much of the prison population in aging buildings or abandoned public or military buildings, which despite improvements had poor ventilation and sanitation, substandard construction, and inadequate space and light, parts of the US Reports says as it also

exposed the poor conditions in Ghana’s prisons. The revelations in the Reports also speak very badly of the country and require the immediate attention of those in authority to at least provide basic needs for inmates in the various prisons.
