Family Of 10 Killed In Latest South Africa Mass Shooting
Some gunmen reportedly killed 10 members of a family on Friday, in Imbali, a township south of Pietermaritzburg in the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The latest mass shooting, police said seven women and three men were fatally wounded in the incident.
According to initial police reports, unknown gunmen stormed a Pietermaritzburg homestead and ambushed the family, police spokeswoman Lirandzu Themba said in a statement. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear. Mass shootings are relatively common in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates.
Ward councillor Mabhungu Mkhize confirmed the incident and said the community is in shock, noting that he received a call just after 4 am alerting him to the shooting. I went to the scene and when I got there the police had already put out tapes. I could not see because it was dark, but the police told us 10 people were killed. They told us it was eight women and two men. We are yet to understand if there were children who were also killed.
